Evaluating the Impact of Medications on Daily Functioning

Medications can play a role in a longer life, a better quality of life, and better health. Medications are a universal treatment for many types of illnesses. Medications not only treat and heal, but they also further early diagnosis, stop serious infections, ease pain, and allow fatally ill patients to live out their last days more comfortably. However, when not used properly, medications can be dangerous and can have harmful consequences. Those that take multiple medications for diseases like arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s disease, and osteoporosis must be especially diligent.

Beware that some medications can affect daily functioning, such as:

  • Speech problems
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Memory impairment
  • Changes in appetite
  • Muscle weakness
  • Insomnia
  • Confusion
  • Depression
  • Disorientation
  • Fatigue
  • Pain
  • Changes in vision or skin
  • Low blood pressure
  • Impulsive actions
  • Gastrointestinal issues

When prescribed a medication it is important to ask:

  • Is it actually needed?
  • Is it right for the condition?
  • Will it affect other coexisting medical conditions?
  • Is the dose correct?
  • Is there any dangerous interactions or side effects?
  • What are the guidelines for safe use?
