Drug
/ Alcohol Dependency and Abuse |
Alcoholism
is an addictive disorder that refers to a dependence on
alcohol, which seriously impairs an individual's life adjustment
in terms of health, personal relationships, and occupational
functioning. The most common symptoms are frequent desire
for alcohol, increased consumption, morning drinking, extreme
behavior, and memory lapses.
Aside
from alcohol, there are many psychoactive drugs commonly
associated with addiction in our society. Though they may
occur at any age, drug abuse and dependence are most common
during adolescence and young adulthood.
There are variations
in the effects and severity of drug abuse depending on the
type, amount and duration of drug use; the physical and
psychological makeup of the individual; and in some instances,
the social setting in which the drug experience occurs.
Symptoms include restlessness, euphoria, slurred speech,
decreased attention span and impaired judgment. Some warning
signs are self-imposed isolation, lying and stealing, deteriorating
family relationships, and overall changes in behavior and
attitude.
