Ellen Shapiro, PhD
Dr. Shapiro is dedicated to helping people deal more effectively with life’s challenges, and offers psychotherapy and sex therapy with a holistic approach for individuals and couples. Psychotherapy can help with all kinds of problems, including anxiety, depression, grief, persistent anger or resentment, stress, and all kinds of limiting beliefs and behaviors. Psychotherapy can improve troubling relationship dynamics, such as persistent, frustrating patterns that don’t lead to resolution. Or perhaps you find yourself repeating unhealthy thoughts, feelings and behaviors that you would like relief from—therapy can help! Sex therapy can be helpful for addressing desire deficits or excess, orgasmic difficulties of all kinds, mismatched desire or interests in couples, painful sex, healing from abusive experiences, and gender and sexuality issues.
Dr. Shapiro uses a variety of therapeutic modalities and approaches to assist people in healing and recovery. In practice these approaches may blend together more or less, depending on the situation. Deep healing can often be found through integrating body-centered techniques with talk therapy. Dr. Shapiro is trained and experienced in traditional talk psychotherapy, sex therapy, body-centered psychotherapy, and yoga therapy.
Traditional talk psychotherapy, which is a big component of sex therapy as well, provides a safe space in a non-judgmental atmosphere to talk through thoughts and feelings about issues in your life, and to work toward new approaches. Talk therapy helps you become more aware of unproductive emotional and behavioral patterns and empowers you to find more effective and fulfilling alternatives.
Another approach to healing is body-centered psychotherapy, which is based on the recognition that all emotions originate in the body. Body-centered therapy uses exploration of body sensations and of the “felt sense” of moment-to-moment experience as portals to deeper emotional healing. Mindfulness techniques for practicing present moment awareness are often included. Body-centered therapeutic practices work on emotional, somatic, and energetic as well as on psychological and cognitive levels.
Psychotherapy and sex therapy sessions always include some talk therapy, and may also include body-centered and experiential techniques such as EMDR, guided visualization, breathing and movement techniques, bioenergetics, and guided creative expression, as agreed upon by the client(s) and Dr. Shapiro. Sex therapy never involves any kind of sexual acts or behavior between client and therapist.
Dr. Shapiro is certified as a yoga teacher and a yoga therapist. She teaches yoga classes at the studio she co-owns, Namaste Yoga, and also offers individual, couple and small group yoga instruction and yoga therapy. She regularly leads retreats and workshops in yoga, personal and spiritual development, and sexuality and intimacy. She has found that yoga offers many helpful tools for working with the mind and the emotions.
In all modalities, Dr. Shapiro’s deepest intention is to honor and respect the inner wisdom and natural healing processes within each of us. The focus is on self-empowerment, releasing limiting patterns of beliefs and behavior, and developing skills and tools to live life more fully, with mindful self-awareness and self-acceptance at the core. All sessions are completely personalized to help each client meet their desired outcomes.Learn more about me on my website: DrEllenShapiro.com
