Linda Barnett, PhD

I have a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and have been a licensed psychologist for 31 years. I have a general adult practice, with experience in individual, couple and group modalities.

My office is located in my home, near the junction of I-40, 15-501, 54 and 751 – making it easily accessible from Durham/Duke, Chapel Hill/UNC and RTP.

My own training is eclectic, so I will likely draw upon a number of treatment models. I think about family of origin issues as I conceptualize each treatment plan; however, I find it most helpful to work primarily from a perspective that emphasizes what is present in your life and relationships.

The first session I will ask you, “What brings you into therapy at this time and how can I be helpful to you?” I will listen to your answer and begin to think about the possible solutions to the problems you have outlined. Near the end of the session I will ask you, “If our work together is successful and you walk out of here for the last time feeling that seeing me was the best decision that you ever made, how would your life and your relationships look different than they do today? How would we know we had achieved success?” Your answers to these questions will inform how I formulate our work together. While they are not easy questions to answer, I have found that nothing energizes someone to do the work of self-transformation as well as a clear vision of what they want in life, a compelling goal toward which we will aim.

In short, I try to help patients live with greater mindfulness and satisfaction in the present, by decreasing the amount of time and energy spent regretting the past or fearing the future.
