Diane E. Donnelly, PhD

I am a psychologist in practice for 40 years and I have offices in both San Francisco and Marin County. I am also trained as a psychoanalyst through the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. About half of my practice is with adults and couples and the other half is with adolescents and children. Problems experienced by people I see include: • Anxiety and its manifestations such as . phobias . panic attacks . sleep disturbance . somatic symptoms (chronic headaches, stomach aches etc.) • grief reactions • difficulty enjoying life • intense self-criticism and feelings of inadequacy • self-defeating behaviors • Inhibitions in work or relationships • eating disorders • substance abuse • attentional problems • behavior problems • school difficulties Here is some information about my background: Education Ph.D., Wright Institute Clinical Psychology 1980 M.A., University of San Francisco Clinical Psychology 1976 Doctoral Program in Social Psychology at University of California, Berkeley 1972-1973 B.A., Psychology, Cornell University 1972 Awards, Publications and Honors JAPA New Author Prize for paper, "The Function of Suffering as Portrayed in The Scarlet Letter and Reflected in Clinical Work," Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Vol. 60, No. 6, December 2012 Phi Beta Kappa Magna cum Laude with distinction in all subjects Undergraduate teaching assistant for various psychology courses at Cornell University Presented paper “Developing Instructional Materials for Teaching Introductory Psychology” at 1969 APA Convention in Washington D.C. Since therapist styles and ways of formulating problems vary, I think the best way to decide whether someone can help you is to see how you feel at the end of one or more sessions and to trust your instincts about whether or not you feel a particular therapist can be helpful to you. Ideally, you would leave an initial consultation with a new way of thinking about the problem that brought you in. If you would like to schedule an initial appointment, please leave your name and phone number(s) with my voicemail and I will return your call as soon as I can. You can also leave me an email.
