Michael J. Gilewski, PhD
I am a neuropsychologist in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Loma Linda University Health. In addition to inpatient rehabilitation, faculty and research duties, the majority of my time is devoted to outpatient assessment and treatment of persons with disabling conditions. The primary aim in treatment is to help patients develop the skills to more efficiently use the nervous system to enable the mind to more efficiently manage disruptive symptoms and optimize recovery of function. This applies to persons with chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, complex medical problems, brain injuries, neurological disorders, and complications of congenital disabilities. Although skilled in treatment of traditional mental health and substance abuse, I do not provide traditional psychotherapy for persons struggling with primary psychiatric disorders. I conduct neuropsychological assessments of persons with brain impairment. In addition to the traditional assessment of higher brain functions (attention, memory, executive functions, etc.), I also assess as necessary more basic brain functions that can have immense disruptive effects on thinking and everyday function, such as eye movements and perception as it affects balance, smell, and autonomic regulation. My experience enables me to assess brain function within the larger context of physical health. I have been trained in and employ as necessary specialized techniques in cognitive rehabilitation, biofeedback, neurofeedback, EMDR, and keep abreast of the scientific literature for novel applications of new treatments. Treatment often involves learning skills and require active practice by patients at home. The psychological treatment is cognitive-behavioral within a larger mindfulness context. One's spiritual practice in any form is supported. Treatment is provided for adults of any age and some adolescents. I have provided expert witness services predominantly for acquired brain injuries and competency in older adults.
