Stacey Dershewitz, PsyD

If you’re considering therapy, chances are there are aspects of your life that aren’t going well. Maybe your relationships are unfulfilling or one-sided. Maybe you’re having a hard time adjusting to a change or traumatic experience. Maybe you’ve been feeling down, on edge, defeated, or overwhelmed. Maybe you’re not even sure why, but you know you’re not as satisfied as you want to be. Therapy is a place where you can better understand the issues that are getting in the way of your happiness, explore options for a more fulfilling future, and get support as you contemplate change or adjust to a difficult reality. I provide compassion, understanding, and hope as you navigate life’s challenges. As a licensed clinical psychologist with twenty years of experience, I strive to develop a thorough, nuanced understanding of not only the challenges you are facing, but also of who you are as a person and who you would like to become. This may involve exploration of how your cultural, religious, and gender identities, as well as your health and disability status, have shaped your self-image and worldview. I will work with you to develop self-acceptance and recognize, address, and alter patterns of behavior and relating – some of which may occur outside of your awareness - that may contribute to your difficulties. I bring patience, warmth, emotional honesty, and a deep appreciation for how hard it can be to change to my work. I offer both individual psychotherapy and psychological assessments, including ADHD and autism assessments, for adults. I frequently work with people struggling with mood disorders, relationship concerns, poor self-image, traumatic experiences, fertility and parenting challenges, and life transitions. A sizable portion of my practice involves working with neurodiverse adults, many of whom identify as autistic or “Aspies," as well as with parents and caregivers of neurodiverse children. I work from a trauma informed, neurodiversity affirming framework. I take an integrative approach to treatment that is tailored to each individual's needs and goals. While I am trained as a generalist, I have specialized training in psychodynamic therapy, EMDR, fertility and postpartum counseling, and clinical supervision. Outside of my private practice, I work as an adjunct faculty member at the George Washington University Professional Psychology Program and as a clinical supervisor for both doctoral candidates in clinical psychology and psychiatry residents. Prior to entering full-time private practice, I served as the Director of the George Washington University’s Center Clinic. I hold a B.A. from Duke University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, and a Psy.D. in clinical psychology from George Washington University.
